On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, remember the 14 women killed in an act of gender-based violence at Ecole Polytechnique in Montréal on December 6, 1989. Killed because they were women. Remember their names.

Last evening we welcomed Natural Kids Movement to our office who led an Interactive Black Hair Care Workshop for our caregivers, staff, children and youth. The workshop was a celebration of culture and history and helped to empower families and build confidence. The night was filled with learning, hair care tips and smiles… and great food and music.
Thank you to the organizers and volunteers; it was amazing to see so many youth and families sharing and learning together. Takiyah Wedderburn and her team from Natural Kids Movement were fantastic. They provided wonderful information and some excellent instruction on braiding and haircare in general.

We are honoured to have several staff attending tonight`s Resilient Voices Gala in support of Victim Services of Durham Region. What a beautiful event, proceeds of which will fund the important work of Victim Services, including many trauma-informed programs that help individuals who have been impacted by crime or tragedy including many of the children, youth and families we serve.

On Tuesday, November 11 at 11 a.m., we observe two minutes of silence in remembrance and honour of the dedication and contributions of those who have served in Canada’s military. We encourage everyone to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by Veterans both in times of conflict and peace.
We recognize and pay tribute to all veterans regardless of their racial identity, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, language, faith, and ethno-cultural identity. In so doing, we recognize historically forgotten members of the Canadian Armed Forces including women, those from Indigenous and equity seeking-communities in all their intersecting identities.

November 8 is National Indigenous Veterans Day, a day of remembrance and recognition of the contributions of Indigenous veterans who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces. Let us honour the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Veterans and their service to Canada, and those whose lives were lost or changed forever. It is estimated that over 7,000 Indigenous peoples served in First and Second World Wars and the Korean War, and thousands more have served in times of both conflict and peace.
Indigenous peoples were not subject to conscription because they were not full citizens of Canada, regardless, many volunteered. Many travelled from remote communities, overcame language barriers, and faced racism and discrimination to enlist. While many Indigenous people did enlist, they were often undercounted thus unrecognized. Despite these challenges, many served with distinction and were awarded medals for bravery in action.
Locally there is an event being held at Whitby Public Library (Central Branch) on Saturday, November 8, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon to honour the courage and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis veterans through ceremony, storytelling, and community reflection.

We had a fantastic day today as we welcomed 13 grade nine students for Take Your Kids to Work Day. Several of our staff joined us to talk about some resume tips, career planning, what our career paths looked like, and the various career opportunities in the child welfare sector.
Thank you to the organizers and the staff presenters, and thank you to the students who participated.

Our Live Proud committee was thrilled to spend an inspiring day with Cardiff Youth Services, sharing ideas, successes, and best practices for supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and communities. Connecting with organizations from both near and far highlighted the power of collaboration and the impact of working together to create real change. We also met with several local partners, deepening our network and commitment to building strong, inclusive support systems throughout our region.
By engaging our community, listening to diverse voices, and championing youth-led initiatives, we continue to ensure safe, empowering spaces for all young people to thrive. Together, we’re dedicated to building a future where every youth feels respected, supported, celebrated and empowered.
