Durham CAS Anti-Black Racism Statement

A message from Durham Children’s Aid Society and the Office of Equity, Communications and Community Partnership

Durham CAS stands in solidarity with the Black community of Canada and the world. Collectively we pledge to advocate and agitate for racial equity, social justice and humanity. We maintain that zero tolerance for violence in all its manifestations of direct, systemic and cultural oppression and in the form of Anti-Black racism is a matter of respect for human rights.

Durham CAS Community Advisory Council Statement

Our Canadian history speaks of the brutal transplantation of bodies in the legacy that is Black Enslavement; the continued strength and resiliency of Black Peoples to advocate, overcome and rise above oppression and recognizes Resolution 68/237 of the United Nations 2014 Declaration of the decade for people of African descent and their right to recognition, justice and development.

Community Advisory Council Background

In 2016, Durham CAS partnered with community leaders in Durham Region to form the Community Advisory Council.  The purpose of the Council is to provide a collaborative and transparent forum to raise and discuss systemic issues relating to child welfare in Durham Region’s Black and/or oppressed communities, and to make suggestions and recommendations to the attention of the Society.  The responsibilities of the Council are:

  • to serve in an advisory and consultative capacity, making recommendations to improve the service experience of children, youth and families;
  • to identify challenges and opportunities around system issues, including racism;
  • to advance community engagement.
